Event promo done as a Mac vs PC tv spot parody!
Two more "Volunteer" segments...
Here are two internal projects that were produced for very specific uses... the first being for a meeting with the Meighen Foundation that supports the Salvation Army's work in Canada and the second for an event hosting the General while he's visiting Toronto (the General is the international Salvation Army leader).
I've actually been on the road and working on a lot of other internal projects so this is the first posting in a while.
Although shot in late 2004 for our 2005 Partners Mission campaign, these two segments have never been posted. Originally part of a longer video, I made only a few slight adjusts and the segments stand on their own.
A short piece that brings the Salvation Army kettle to the web.
So the new Partners In Mission DVD is complete and being distributed across Canada and Bermuda to support the upcoming campaign. This year's feature country is Myanmar. "Partners In Mission" is an internal Salvation Army church based fundraising effort to support international partner territories. You may have noticed the more free flowing version of a Myanmar video further down in this blog but these videos are the formally released fundraising versions that give more insight into the country and the Salvations Army's work there.
Attached is a short video montage of an event that involved Canada Post's kick off to Christmas... including the launch of the 24th Santa letter writing campaign, a new stamp and $25,000 donation to the Salvation Army in Canada. Media... kids... Santa... let the season begin!
On November 19th, 2006 The Salvation Army Canada once again marched in the Toronto Santa Clause Parade. This video edit was done for a "Thank You" DVD that would be given out to the band members that participated and focuses on the band's participation.
Re-edited tv promo spot for our 2006 Santa Shuffle run. It is a re-edit of the spot I shot and edited in 2005 but contains new footage from last Decembers Mississauga event... to give it less of an urban feel.
In April 2006, I had the opportunity to fly to Myanmar and document some of the work The Salvation Army is involved with. The work ranges from education and health programs to power and water projects. Although politically this country's military dictatorship has been frowned upon by many democratic nations, the people themselves are very warm and genuine.
This piece is SILENT and contains no audio as it was produced to run at Yonge Dundas Square (downtown Toronto) on a media tower with a large color video monitor during "World Refugee Day"... basically a video billboard like in New York's Times Square.
The 60 second billboard ran along with material from several other organizations that are involved with refugee services and the message had to be very simple... to bring awareness to the fact the Salvation Army is actively involved with helping refugees.
The images are from Albania circa 1999, shot on mini-DV but edited and colorized to have a "gritty film reel" texture.

A short informational piece on the Canadian Salvation Army's camping program. This piece was produced as a short feature for our web site to support the 2006 camp fundraising efforts. I shot the footage and interviews in the summer of 2005 at our Wabana / Jackson's Point Camps in Ontario.
A promotional trailer for a 7 hour series examining the 11 Salvation Army doctrines. The series features prominent Canadian Salvation Army leaders and was originally shot on VHS in the mid-1990's. Video quality is not the greatest but the content is timeless so it was decided it should be re-issued as a 2 DVD set. The videos are targeted towards a Salvation Army audience who would be already familiar with and interested in closer examination of the doctrines.
An interview style feature on Salvation Army homeless shelters. This piece is based on several interviews done at three Toronto homeless shelters and focusses on insight about how the shelters see and approach homelessness from a front line perspective.
Attached is a video that was used for a Salvation Army Social Services conference in Toronto in March 2006.
This is new piece I edited for our web site using footage I shot last summer at the Scarborough Citadel highlighting the type of basketball camps the Salvation Army runs during school breaks and the summer.
Something a little different. A short video I cut using some older footage I had of my two cats... Ozzy and Mushy (although there are also a few shots of other cats). I actually edited this piece well over a year ago when I was experimenting with some effects and filters in Premiere Pro... experimenting on the cats as they say!
This one is a little different than the posts as it is a non-Army music video I cut during some down time. Earlier in the year a friend of mine (Colum Henry) played at gig at the downtown Toronto Hard Rock Cafe.
Our youth team took the a mini-DV camera down to the Toronto Santa Clause Parade and shot some footage of the Salvation Army's first participation in the Toronto Santa Clause Parade in 2005. Unfortunately due to crowds, moving around and finding a good vantage point was difficult so it was tough for them to get a large variety of footage... so as one does with these things... I did what I could when it came time to edit it.
This one is still a work in progress... a video for the annual Christmas show.
Talk about doing it backwards... this is one of my earliest videos I did for the Army when I started in 2004. It was cut from existing footage that was in the Public Relations library. Actually if I remember correctly it was cut on an early Mac G3 using Premiere 6.5
So this is one of my bigger projects that involved traveling and shooting internationally. "Partners In Mission" is an internal Salvation Army church based fundraising effort to support international partner territories. You may have noticed the more free flowing versions of Liberia and Tanzania videos further down in this blog but these are the formally released fundraising versions and are more informational (although I think the other versions are a better watch).
This video was completely shot from scratch on the JVC DV300 over a five day period in early April and then I edited in Premiere Pro 1.0 (this was just before I upgraded to Premiere Pro 1.5) .
Here's another piece that was edited specifically for the web in 2005:
This is a short video that was done strictly for our web site as an update on the Army's emergency relief efforts during the July 2004 Peterborough flooding... shot and edited from scratch...
Tanzania was my first trip to Africa in October 2004... an eye opener in many ways. I was a one man crew and travelled light with a JVC DV300, a couple mics, a few accessories and a tripod.
This is a video I edited shortly after the Tsunami in South Asia (shot on mini-DV by Bram Ryan). Not much I can say about this one.. the video speaks for itself.
So this is Global's version of the TV spot. We provided them with my footage from the Toronto 2004 event and they cut their own version of the spot... and I like what they've done!
This is a TV spot I basically shot and cut from scratch... the one man agency and production house method! I originally shot the footage at last years Toronto Santa Shuffe event (December 04) on Mini-DV using the JVC DV300.
Okay.. this video is a mix of footage I shot and footage I gathered. Its actually kind of a collage of other projects that was put together for our PR conference to highlight some of the Salvation Army efforts in Canada that get media profile from a national perspective... basically a kick off video for the conference....
Okay.. this is one of my personal favorites. This video is completely from scratch. In May 2005 I flew to Liberia via Germany, Belgium and Senegal which was something like 20 hours of flying. I probably should have had a blog at that point as that could have been endless pages. But I won't do that now.. I'll let the video do the talking at this point in time as it is exactly six months later. The video was shot around the Monrovia area on Mini DV using the JVC GY-300 I use for almost everything I've shot for the Army. The audio was recorded at a church service in Monrovia also on the JVC using the on board mic... pretty basic but when you are a one man crew you sometimes have to improvise as you go along... although if I do interviews I try to use a lav or boom mic. The editing was on Premiere Pro 1.5
This one was an informational piece I edited using stills and video provided to me by our U.S. division shortly after Hurricane Katrina...
Here's a more recent edit.. historical Salvation Army footage showing war era activity... edited for a Remembrance Day event...
So I thought I should add some real content.
