Christmas Concert

This one is still a work in progress... a video for the annual Christmas show.

Theme is "What Child Is This" focusing on children of the world... not only on the pathos but also hopefulness (actually those were not my words).

UPDATE:

Further to a request from the concert organziers, I re-cut the video to include some additional footage that gives the video a broader scope... although in some ways it is better... in other ways I think it isn't as powerful...

But as they say.. stay tuned.

UPDATE #2: we finally ended up with the below version... piano is crude and low level as it was only a guide track (music was played live at the event)...

In Canada & Bermuda

Talk about doing it backwards... this is one of my earliest videos I did for the Army when I started in 2004. It was cut from existing footage that was in the Public Relations library. Actually if I remember correctly it was cut on an early Mac G3 using Premiere 6.5

The process was pretty slow as there was no realtime effects. In hind sight its probably a touch over-produced.. a lot going on... but there was a lot of information we had to pack into a short period as it was being shown at an international conference and the video was meant to be an exciting introduction to the Canadian territorial leader's portion at the international conference. It got used a few other places after that.

So here it is..

Partners In Mission

So this is one of my bigger projects that involved traveling and shooting internationally. "Partners In Mission" is an internal Salvation Army church based fundraising effort to support international partner territories. You may have noticed the more free flowing versions of Liberia and Tanzania videos further down in this blog but these are the formally released fundraising versions and are more informational (although I think the other versions are a better watch).

Although shot in 2005 the video actually got distributed January 2006 to kick off the 2006 campaign which features Liberia. Distribution was primarily on DVD and included some 'bonus' interviews (also posted) as well as a number of other data features such as a picture resource archive.

In the tradition of the one man production house these are all primarily done by me from scratch. The tools... video footage was all shot using the JVC DV300, edited on Premiere Pro 1.5, DVD production and mastering on Encore 1.5 and video compression on Cleaner XL. If I haven't mentioned it before, I'm running all the digital video through Canopus' DV Storm2 capture card with break-out box which also comes with real time plug-ins for Premiere Pro.

The english version of the video:

Last year's video was a broader look at "Partners In Mission". It highlighted a number of countries as opposed to focussing just on one.

Red Shield Luncheon

This video was completely shot from scratch on the JVC DV300 over a five day period in early April and then I edited in Premiere Pro 1.0 (this was just before I upgraded to Premiere Pro 1.5) .

It was produced for a fundraising lunch the Ontario Central Division hosts every May. This year's theme was "The Year Of Children and Youth" and the video features some of the Salvation Army programs that service children and youth in this region.

Camps

Here's another piece that was edited specifically for the web in 2005:

Peterborough Floods

This is a short video that was done strictly for our web site as an update on the Army's emergency relief efforts during the July 2004 Peterborough flooding... shot and edited from scratch...

Tanzania

Tanzania was my first trip to Africa in October 2004... an eye opener in many ways. I was a one man crew and travelled light with a JVC DV300, a couple mics, a few accessories and a tripod.

The footage was for a video that is part of a fundraising initiative called "Parters in Mission" (which I will post seperately).

But this is my personal cut:

The Tsunami

This is a video I edited shortly after the Tsunami in South Asia (shot on mini-DV by Bram Ryan). Not much I can say about this one.. the video speaks for itself.

Our Director of World Services also did a follow-up this September 2005 although it was primarily used as an internal update. As there was no new video footage, I video taped him on mini-DV giving an update and edited it together with digital still he had taken:

Santa Shuffle - Global TV

So this is Global's version of the TV spot. We provided them with my footage from the Toronto 2004 event and they cut their own version of the spot... and I like what they've done!

Anyway.. here's their version.. this link is to a mpg formatted file so you may trouble playing back with some browers (depending on your system)...

Santa Shuffle

This is a TV spot I basically shot and cut from scratch... the one man agency and production house method! I originally shot the footage at last years Toronto Santa Shuffe event (December 04) on Mini-DV using the JVC DV300.

Our director of advertising (Andrew Burditt) wrote the copy. The voice-over is our radio show host Doug Field and was recorded internally here in our audio studio (we also recorded a similar radio spot).

So with footage, voice-over and a music track the goal was to cut an effective spot to promote the event details and keep it looking fun.

There's always room for improvement but I thought it turned out okay considering the time and resources it took to put together...

It is supposed to get broadcast across Canada (except on Global).. but that is another post.

And if you are interested a slightly longer version, here is a Toronto event highlights reel that I put together for sponsors using the same footage shortly after the event:

PRD Conference

Okay.. this video is a mix of footage I shot and footage I gathered. Its actually kind of a collage of other projects that was put together for our PR conference to highlight some of the Salvation Army efforts in Canada that get media profile from a national perspective... basically a kick off video for the conference....

Liberia

Okay.. this is one of my personal favorites. This video is completely from scratch. In May 2005 I flew to Liberia via Germany, Belgium and Senegal which was something like 20 hours of flying. I probably should have had a blog at that point as that could have been endless pages. But I won't do that now.. I'll let the video do the talking at this point in time as it is exactly six months later. The video was shot around the Monrovia area on Mini DV using the JVC GY-300 I use for almost everything I've shot for the Army. The audio was recorded at a church service in Monrovia also on the JVC using the on board mic... pretty basic but when you are a one man crew you sometimes have to improvise as you go along... although if I do interviews I try to use a lav or boom mic. The editing was on Premiere Pro 1.5

A quick background.. Liberia is a country in west Africa that is a mess after 14 years of civil unrest... they type of African unrest you see on CNN .... but things were calm when I was there and are still calm at the moment.

So here it is...

Bangladesh

So I thought I should add some real content.

This video is a bit older (as in last year) but has always moved me. The footage was sent to me so I didn't shoot it... but I did edit it.

The piece is based around images from a Salvation Army rehabilitation shelter for women in Bangladesh and has some interesting footage of life in the region... it was used during an event to raise money for the shelter (they were selling the actual crafts the women are shown making in the video)...

More to come....

Well I made it!

I probably should have started a blog a while ago.... I did think about it. I've got things to say and show.

So welcome to my personal "show and tell".
