Internal Projects

Here are two internal projects that were produced for very specific uses... the first being for a meeting with the Meighen Foundation that supports the Salvation Army's work in Canada and the second for an event hosting the General while he's visiting Toronto (the General is the international Salvation Army leader).

Saluting Our Volunteers

I've actually been on the road and working on a lot of other internal projects so this is the first posting in a while.

The first video below was a side interview I did while at the Grace Hospital on another project but as "Volunteer Week" was coming up, I thought it would make a great segment for the web site. It was a good personal experience that gave some insight into volunteering but needed something to compliment it... so I ended up doing a second segment that featured another set of volunteers.

Partners In Mission 2007

So the new Partners In Mission DVD is complete and being distributed across Canada and Bermuda to support the upcoming campaign. This year's feature country is Myanmar. "Partners In Mission" is an internal Salvation Army church based fundraising effort to support international partner territories. You may have noticed the more free flowing version of a Myanmar video further down in this blog but these videos are the formally released fundraising versions that give more insight into the country and the Salvations Army's work there.

As with most of my other project it was the one man production house method. The tools... video footage was all shot using the JVC DV300, edited on Premiere Pro 1.5, DVD production and mastering on Encore 1.5 and video compression on Cleaner XL. If I haven't mentioned it before, I'm running all the digital video through Canopus' DV Storm2 capture card with break-out box which also comes with real time plug-ins for Premiere Pro.

All the the videos are on both youtube.com and Google Video so I won't clutter this entry by trying to insert all 7 of the videos into the blog. Best option is go directly to:

Canada Post Launches Christmas 2006

Salvation Army Canada Marches In 2006 Toronto Santa Clause Parade

Myanmar (Burma) - Images 2006

In April 2006, I had the opportunity to fly to Myanmar and document some of the work The Salvation Army is involved with. The work ranges from education and health programs to power and water projects. Although politically this country's military dictatorship has been frowned upon by many democratic nations, the people themselves are very warm and genuine.

As a one man production team I shot video and digital stills. The video was shot on mini-DV using an older JVC GY-300 and the audio was recorded during a rural church service using the onboard camera mic.

This video is a simple cut with not a lot of effects but is intented to give a flavor of the country and people while highlighting some of the work the Salvation Army is involved with.

Salvation Army Refugee Services

This piece is SILENT and contains no audio as it was produced to run at Yonge Dundas Square (downtown Toronto) on a media tower with a large color video monitor during "World Refugee Day"... basically a video billboard like in New York's Times Square.

The 60 second billboard ran along with material from several other organizations that are involved with refugee services and the message had to be very simple... to bring awareness to the fact the Salvation Army is actively involved with helping refugees.

The images are from Albania circa 1999, shot on mini-DV but edited and colorized to have a "gritty film reel" texture.

The Salvation Army Doctorines

A promotional trailer for a 7 hour series examining the 11 Salvation Army doctrines. The series features prominent Canadian Salvation Army leaders and was originally shot on VHS in the mid-1990's. Video quality is not the greatest but the content is timeless so it was decided it should be re-issued as a 2 DVD set. The videos are targeted towards a Salvation Army audience who would be already familiar with and interested in closer examination of the doctrines.

Cut To Cats

Something a little different. A short video I cut using some older footage I had of my two cats... Ozzy and Mushy (although there are also a few shots of other cats). I actually edited this piece well over a year ago when I was experimenting with some effects and filters in Premiere Pro... experimenting on the cats as they say!

John & Paul

This one is a little different than the posts as it is a non-Army music video I cut during some down time. Earlier in the year a friend of mine (Colum Henry) played at gig at the downtown Toronto Hard Rock Cafe.

Colum and his partner do a show as Paul McCartney and John Lennon BUT it isn't a typical Beatles cover show. The concept is that John and Paul get together for an accoustical jam session in the early seventies (several years after the Beatles break-up). In addition to being great musicians they do the show completely in character.

The footage was shot using one mini-DV camera (JVC DV300) during a 30 minute set. The soundtrack is the original Beatles recording as I did not do any on-site audio recording that night (other than the on-board mic).

So ladies and gentleman.. live on this very stage... the Beatles...

Santa Clause Parade

Our youth team took the a mini-DV camera down to the Toronto Santa Clause Parade and shot some footage of the Salvation Army's first participation in the Toronto Santa Clause Parade in 2005. Unfortunately due to crowds, moving around and finding a good vantage point was difficult so it was tough for them to get a large variety of footage... so as one does with these things... I did what I could when it came time to edit it.

This video edit was done for a "Thank You" DVD that would be given out to the band members that participated and only focuses on the band marching and doesn't include other parade footage.

Christmas Concert

In Canada & Bermuda

Talk about doing it backwards... this is one of my earliest videos I did for the Army when I started in 2004. It was cut from existing footage that was in the Public Relations library. Actually if I remember correctly it was cut on an early Mac G3 using Premiere 6.5

The process was pretty slow as there was no realtime effects. In hind sight its probably a touch over-produced.. a lot going on... but there was a lot of information we had to pack into a short period as it was being shown at an international conference and the video was meant to be an exciting introduction to the Canadian territorial leader's portion at the international conference. It got used a few other places after that.

So this is one of my bigger projects that involved traveling and shooting internationally. "Partners In Mission" is an internal Salvation Army church based fundraising effort to support international partner territories. You may have noticed the more free flowing versions of Liberia and Tanzania videos further down in this blog but these are the formally released fundraising versions and are more informational (although I think the other versions are a better watch).

Although shot in 2005 the video actually got distributed January 2006 to kick off the 2006 campaign which features Liberia. Distribution was primarily on DVD and included some 'bonus' interviews (also posted) as well as a number of other data features such as a picture resource archive.

In the tradition of the one man production house these are all primarily done by me from scratch. The tools... video footage was all shot using the JVC DV300, edited on Premiere Pro 1.5, DVD production and mastering on Encore 1.5 and video compression on Cleaner XL.
